McDonald’s Japan’s Anime Tribute to ‘Kiki’s Delivery Service

by Hazel

McDonald’s Japan has recently launched a series of ads featuring Kiki, the beloved protagonist from Studio Ghibli’s 1989 film “Kiki’s Delivery Service,” along with her feline companion Jiji. These advertisements pay homage to the iconic anime character, depicting Kiki flying on her broomstick and energetically navigating through a crowd with groceries, always accompanied by Jiji.

Known for its collaborations with popular anime franchises, McDonald’s Japan previously featured Detective Conan in its advertising campaign earlier this year. These ads coincided with the release of the latest Detective Conan film, “The Million-Dollar Pentagram,” highlighting McDonald’s Chicken Tatsuta Sandwich.

Beyond major franchise collaborations, McDonald’s Japan has also created original anime-style ads, such as the “Night Mac” campaign portraying everyday scenarios of people enjoying McDonald’s meals. Additionally, they introduced an anime mascot based on the internet meme Nyan Cat to promote their “shaka shaka” fries.

“Kiki’s Delivery Service,” adapted from Eiko Kadono’s children’s novel, follows the adventures of Kiki, a young witch using her flying ability to start a delivery service in a seaside town. The film, a cherished classic, showcases Kiki’s encounters with various characters as she navigates her magical and personal journey.
