Japanese animation studio Science SARU has revealed plans for a new Ghost in the Shell anime, set to debut in 2026. Based on Masamune Shirow’s iconic 1989 manga, the series follows the success of the 1995 animated film and a 2017 live-action adaptation.
Directed by Mokochan (Toma Kimura), known for his work on Dan Da Dan and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, the series will feature a script by sci-fi author EnJoe Toh (Self-Reference ENGINE). Character design and animation direction will be handled by Shuhei Handa, a key figure behind Scott Pilgrim Takes Off and Spriggan.
Kimura, who joined Science SARU in 2015, has contributed to various projects, including The Heike Story (2022) and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off (2023). Toh, an award-winning author, is known for his novels like The Empire of Corpses and Mojika. Handa, a former Gainax employee, has worked on notable series like Little Witch Academia and One Punch Man.
The teaser trailer offers a glimpse of the series, with a second visual by Handa featuring Motoko Kusanagi and the Fuchikoma tank. Shirow, the original creator, noted that this new adaptation is the fourth version of Ghost in the Shell, and expressed hope it will offer fans a fresh visual experience.
Shirow, who began his career in manga in 1982, remains a significant influence on cyberpunk and animation. Fans are eagerly awaiting the latest chapter in the Ghost in the Shell saga.
