Lazarus, the latest anime from Cowboy Bebop creator Shinichiro Watanabe, is now part of the Adult Swim lineup. True to Watanabe’s style, the series features standout music, and its ending sequence is underscored by a 90s alternative classic.
The anime’s ending theme, also titled “Lazarus,” is a 1992 track by the English alternative rock band the Boo Radleys. This song, which was the opening track on their Giant Steps album, serves as the emotional backdrop to the series’ conclusion.
Shinichiro Watanabe is the writer and director of Lazarus, with animation produced by MAPPA and planning by SOLA ENTERTAINMENT. Chad Stahelski (87Eleven Action Design) oversees the action sequences, Akemi Hayashi handles character designs, and Kamasi Washington, Bonobo, and Floating Points contribute to the music.
The story of Lazarus is set in 2052, where the world is on the brink of peace and stability, thanks in part to a revolutionary painkiller drug called “Hapna.” Created by the brilliant Dr. Skinner, Hapna is touted as a cure for pain with no known side effects, leading to a seemingly utopian era. However, when Dr. Skinner mysteriously disappears, the world soon descends into chaos.
Three years later, Skinner resurfaces, now as a prophet who causes widespread destruction. The true nature of Hapna is revealed: it has a delayed, fatal effect that triggers three years after ingestion, threatening global extinction. With only thirty days left, a team of five agents, known as “Lazarus,” is tasked with locating Skinner and finding a cure. As they race against time, they must uncover Skinner’s true motives and save humanity from impending doom.
