The upcoming anime film Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid: The Lonely Dragon Wants to Be Loved has released its first main trailer ahead of its June 27 premiere in Japan.
The film features a notable change in the voice cast, with Shiori Suigura replacing Tomomi Mineuchi as Ilulu. Additionally, new cast members include Fumihiko Tachiki as Kimun Kamui and Nobunaga Shimazaki as Azad.
Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, written and illustrated by Coolkyousinnjya, first debuted in 2013 in Monthly Action, a manga magazine published by Futabasha. After the magazine ceased publication in 2024, the series moved to Manga Action. Over time, the manga has inspired several spin-offs, including Kanna’s Daily Life, Elma’s Office Lady Diary, Lucoa is My XX, and Fafnir the Recluse. These spin-offs were originally serialized in Monthly Action before transitioning to Web Action.
The franchise also expanded into gaming with the release of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid: Burst Forth!! Choro-gon Breath in March 2022 in Japan, followed by a North American release by Aksys Games in August 2022.
Kyoto Animation adapted the manga into an anime series in 2017, with Yasuhiro Takemoto directing. However, Takemoto tragically passed away in the 2019 Kyoto Animation arson attack, an event that deeply affected the anime industry.
Despite the loss, Kyoto Animation continued the adaptation, with Tatsuya Ishihara directing the second season, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S, in 2021. Takemoto was credited posthumously, and the season was named Best Anime of the Season for Summer 2021.
The upcoming film marks another milestone for the beloved series, further expanding its universe for longtime fans.
