WIT Studio, known for its work on Attack on Titan Seasons 1-3 and Spy x Family, is set to release a new anime on Netflix. The studio’s adaptation of Gosho Aoyama’s late-’80s manga, YAIBA: Samurai Legend, is officially scheduled for an April 5 premiere.
The anime will be available to viewers in the United States, Canada, Latin America, Australia, and New Zealand, with distribution rights shared between Netflix and Hulu. While Hulu will stream the series in select regions, both platforms will air episodes the day after their release in Japan on Nippon TV.
YAIBA: Samurai Legend marks the second adaptation of Aoyama’s manga. The original anime, Yaiba, aired 52 episodes between 1993 and 1994, gaining a cult following. Aoyama, also the creator of the long-running Detective Conan series, is hoping to repeat the success of his iconic detective franchise with YAIBA: Samurai Legend, which features a weekly release schedule—a shift from Netflix’s usual binge model. This change may help generate momentum and build anticipation for the new series.
WIT Studio is handling the animation, with Takahiro Hasui (known for Mob Psycho 100 and My Hero Academia) directing, and Touko Machida (Ramen Fighter Miki) writing the scripts. Yoshimichi Kameda (Mob Psycho 100) serves as character designer and chief animation director. The Japanese voice cast includes Minami Takayama (Detective Conan) as Yaiba and Manaka Iwami (Fruits Basket) as Tohru Honda.
As Spring 2025 anime watchlists grow, YAIBA: Samurai Legend is sure to be a nostalgic highlight for fans eager to revisit old favorites and discover new hits. The series follows Tetsujin’s journey to becoming a true samurai, filled with rivals, friends, and ancient powers.
YAIBA: Samurai Legend premieres on Netflix on April 5.
