Kosaka, who directed and wrote the screenplay for Nasu: Summer in Andalusia, also contributed character designs. He previously worked as an animation director on Hayao Miyazaki’s Howl’s Moving Castle and The Wind Rises. His most recent film was 2018’s Okko’s Inn.
The film’s art direction was handled by Naoya Tanaka, who worked on Only Yesterday and Pom Poko. The photography directors were Hisao Shirai (Millennium Actress, My Neighbor Totoro) and Katsuyoshi Kishi (Rozen Maiden). Toshiyuki Honda, known for his work on Metropolis and Tokyo Babylon, composed the music. Madhouse managed the animation production.
Nasu: Summer in Andalusia was the first Japanese anime film to be shown at the Cannes Film Festival. It was followed by a 2007 sequel, Nasu: A Migratory Bird with Suitcase.
Based on Io Kuroda’s manga, serialized in Kodansha’s Monthly Afternoon from 2000 to 2002, the film follows the story of Pepe Benengeli, a second-string cyclist racing in Andalusia. Although not a favorite to win, Pepe’s journey takes an unexpected turn as he faces personal revelations during the race, culminating in a dramatic final push towards the finish line.
Pre-orders for the Blu-ray are now available on MediaOCD’s website, where the edition comes with a limited cardboard slipcover. Shipping will be restricted to North America.
