Heritage Auctions will host its biggest anime art auction, The Art of Anime, Vol. VI, in honor of Studio Ghibli’s 40th anniversary. The event features rare production artwork from Studio Ghibli, Akira, Dragon Ball Z, and other classics.
“This auction is a tribute to the artistry and vision that have made Studio Ghibli a global phenomenon,” said Jim Lentz, Heritage’s Vice President of Animation and Anime Art. “Collectors and fans will have the chance to own pieces from films that have inspired generations.”
Studio Ghibli Highlights
Notable auction pieces include:
- A production cel and background from Kiki’s Delivery Service featuring Kiki at a client’s oven.
- A production cel from My Neighbor Totoro showcasing the Catbus atop a rooftop.
- A dramatic scene from Grave of the Fireflies.
- Artwork from Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke, and Porco Rosso.
Expanding Anime Collection
The auction includes over 1,200 anime artworks, such as:
- Akira production pieces, including hand-painted backgrounds and action cels of Kaneda and Tetsuo.
- Dragon Ball Z cels featuring Goku, Vegeta, Trunks, and Piccolo.
- Artwork from Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Macross.
Manga and Rare Animation Art
Manga collectors can find original works by Osamu Tezuka, including pages from Big X and Phantom Detective, as well as Jiro Kuwata’s Ultraseven.
The auction also offers production cels from Vampire Hunter D, Ninja Scroll, Ghost in the Shell, and Peter Chung’s Æon Flux, along with artwork from Heavy Metal and Fantastic Planet.
“The anime art market continues to grow, and this auction highlights the appreciation for these works as cultural artifacts and fine art,” Lentz said.
With its vast selection of rare and iconic pieces, The Art of Anime, Vol. VI is set to be a landmark event for anime collectors worldwide.
