In disappointing news for fans hoping to see more of Princess Tiana, Disney+ has officially canceled its planned TV series. The show, which was meant to follow the adventures of the beloved heroine from The Princess and the Frog, had been in development for five years but will not be moving forward.
The Tiana TV series was first announced alongside other Disney+ projects, such as Dug Days, Baymax!, and Zootopia+. While these shows were successfully produced, Tiana has been notably absent from updates. The last news came in 2023, when Disney confirmed that Joyce Sherri would be the head writer and co-director with Steve Anderson. However, work on the project had not even begun at that point, and fans were left with only a glimpse of the show’s concept art when it was first announced.
The cancellation of Tiana is part of a broader shift in Disney’s strategy, which now focuses on a pivot away from “original longform content for streaming.” While the company has not explained this decision clearly, it appears to refer to moving away from larger TV series or films and focusing more on shortform content. Shows like Baymax! and Zootopia+ are examples of such content.
This shift raises questions about other future Disney+ projects. Could this mean the end of highly anticipated series like Daredevil: Born Again or X-Men 97? Will we see fewer long-form productions and more short, standalone specials? The future of Disney+ content remains uncertain.
Despite the cancellation of the Tiana series, there is still hope. With this new focus on shortform content, it’s possible the Tiana project could be reworked into a single feature. If successful, it could even see a theatrical release, similar to Moana 2. For now, this is the best possibility for fans eager to see more of Tiana’s story.
