Crunchyroll has released a second trailer for the upcoming anime Nyaight of the Living Cat, a new apocalyptic comedy from renowned Japanese horror filmmaker Takashi Miike (known for Ichi the Killer, Audition, 13 Assassins). This project brings a unique twist to the genre, where a virus transforms anyone who comes into contact with cats into feline creatures, sparking a worldwide disaster.
The series is set to premiere globally on Crunchyroll in July 2025 (excluding Asia). Sony Pictures Entertainment will handle distribution within Japan and other Asian regions.
Plot Overview:
In the year 20XX, cats have taken over the world. A strange virus, turning anyone who touches a cat into one, spreads rapidly, resulting in a “nyandemic.” As cats rub against humans, they transform into cats themselves. Can humanity resist the urge to pet these adorable creatures and survive in a world overrun by cats?
Additionally, the voice cast for the anime was announced:
Masaaki Mizunaka (Ryuen Kakeru in Classroom of the Elite) voices Kunagi, a mysterious amnesiac cat café worker with superhuman abilities.
Reina Ueda (Cha Hae-in in Solo Leveling) plays Kaoru, a high school student who works at her brother’s cat café and loves cats.
Reiji Kawashima (Fushi in To Your Eternity) voices Arata, a former athlete and ninja enthusiast who was saved by Kunagi just before turning into a cat.
Yu Serizawa (Mini Yaemori in Rent-A-Girlfriend) voices Tsutsumi, a cat lover allergic to them, leading her down unexpected paths.
Subaru Kimura (Aoi Todo in Jujutsu Kaisen) voices Len Ward, a tough, bold cat lover from the legendary Ward family, known for surviving three days of cat attacks.
Yoshiki Nakajima (Yo Uei in Dr. STONE) voices Masaki Ward, Len’s intelligent and popular younger brother, part of the Ward family.
Hiroki Yasumoto (Elfman Strauss in Fairy Tail) voices Tanishi, a regular at Kunagi’s café who works alongside him and Kaoru.
Ryota Takeuchi (Elias Ainsworth in The Ancient Magus’ Bride) voices Gaku, Kaoru’s older brother and the café owner, who hires Kunagi despite his memory loss.
The anime is based on the manga Night of the Living Cat, written by Hawkman and illustrated by Mecha-Roots. Miike serves as the executive director, with Tomohiro Kamitani (director of Mix Mesisei Story S2) leading the direction. The screenplay is written by Shingo Irie (known for Golden Kamuy S1), with character designs by Takao Maki (of Basilisk: The Ouka Ninja Scrolls), and music by Koji Endo (composer for 13 Assassins, Audition, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable).
