To celebrate the 35th anniversary of the beloved 1990s anime Samurai Pizza Cats, a new video game is officially in development. Along with the announcement, a special trailer featuring the original voice cast has been released.
Originally airing in Japan on February 1, 1990, Kyatto Ninden Teyandee is a sci-fi action-comedy set in Edoropolis, a city populated by anthropomorphic robotic animals. The series gained international fame when it was localized as Samurai Pizza Cats in the early 1990s and continues to have a devoted fanbase worldwide.
The upcoming game, titled Samurai Pizza Cats: Blast from the Past, is being developed by Dutch studio BLAST ZERO (known for Jitsu Squad) and will be distributed globally by Red Dunes Games, based in the United Arab Emirates. This 2D Action RPG will allow players to switch between the Pizza Cats, using their unique abilities to solve puzzles and engage in action-packed battles in Little Tokyo. The newly released trailer showcases a faithful recreation of the anime’s cel animation style, offering a glimpse of in-game footage.
Notably, the script for the Japanese trailer is supervised by Satoru Akahori, the original screenplay writer, and features a reunion of both the English and Japanese voice casts.
The English voice cast includes Rick Jones (Speedy Cerviche), Sonja Ball (Polly Esther), Terrence Scammell (Guido Anchovy, Narrator), and Dean Hagopian as Seymour “The Big” Cheese. The Japanese cast includes Kappei Yamaguchi (Yattarou), Ai Orikasa (Pururun), Ikuya Sawaki (Kitsunezuka Ko’on-no-Kami), Naoki Tatsuta (Karasu Gennarisai), and Kenyu Horiuchi (Narrator). Seiichirō Yamashita joins the cast as Sukashii, taking over the role from Jurota Kosugi.
In celebration, voice actors Kappei Yamaguchi, Ai Orikasa, and Seiichirō Yamashita shared their thoughts on the game and the anniversary.
Kappei Yamaguchi (Yattarou) expressed his excitement about returning to the role, saying, “Yattarou, along with Ranma, is one of my key roles as a voice actor. I was thrilled when I heard about the game, and I couldn’t be happier to see it come to life.” He also reflected on the lasting popularity of Kyatto Ninden Teyandee, saying, “It’s amazing to see that this series continues to be loved both in Japan and overseas after 35 years.”
Ai Orikasa (Pururun) shared her joy about reuniting with the original cast, saying, “Even after 35 years, the series remains close to my heart. It was incredible to see how much passion the development team put into this project.” She also praised Seiichirō Yamashita’s portrayal of Sukashii.
Seiichirō Yamashita (Sukashii), who was new to the series, expressed his excitement about joining the cast. “It’s a great honor to be part of this project,” he said. “The love for Kyatto Ninden Teyandee is undeniable, and I’m proud to contribute to such an iconic series.”
The 35th anniversary celebration not only marks the return of the classic anime, but also introduces a fresh new chapter for both long-time fans and new players.
