Fans of the Pokémon anime will have a special treat on February 27, 2025, as the franchise celebrates Pokémon Day with a brand new special episode titled Dragonite and the Postman. A behind-the-scenes video featuring the lead voice actor, Riko Fukumoto, has been released to give fans a sneak peek at the upcoming episode.
The special will premiere on February 27 at 12 a.m. (JST) on Pokémon’s official YouTube channel. It is a collaboration between The Pokémon Company and CoMix Wave Films, the studio behind films like Your Name, Weathering with You, and Suzume. The story follows Hana, a 12-year-old girl from the Paldea region, as she embarks on a mission to deliver an unmarked letter. Along the way, she teams up with Dragonite postal carriers, racing against time to ensure the letter reaches its destination.
A New Pokémon Anime for Everyone
In an interview with Japanese news site Oricon, Fukumoto expressed her excitement about being part of the special, saying, “I’m very happy to be involved in such a special work as the main character.” She shared that while voicing Hana, she focused on capturing the innocence and childlike qualities of a 12-year-old. Fukumoto also highlighted her favorite parts of the episode, particularly the scenes where Pokémon use their unique abilities to help at the post office. “The scene where they fly on Dragonite, and the appearance of Pokémon from different regions, were fun to watch,” she said.
Fukumoto revealed that she has been a Pokémon fan since elementary school, starting with the anime and later playing Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. As she grew older, she became a fan of Pokémon Alpha Sapphire and spent countless hours leveling up her Pokémon. Currently, she’s playing Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team on the Nintendo DS. “I felt it was fate and I was very happy,” she said about getting involved with the anime while playing the game.
When asked about her favorite Pokémon, Fukumoto revealed it was Bulbasaur, which she got as her partner in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team after answering the game’s introductory questions. “I wonder if it’s like me,” she added, referencing the connection many players feel with their chosen Pokémon.
Fukumoto’s Final Words
In closing, Fukumoto encouraged fans to watch the upcoming anime, saying, “It’s an exciting story to watch, and I think you’ll be inspired by Hana’s struggle to pursue her dreams. Even people who have never seen Pokémon before will definitely enjoy this work.” With Pokémon Day just around the corner, fans are eagerly anticipating new content, including the Dragonite and the Postman special. 2025’s Pokémon Day celebration is expected to feature exciting announcements, including updates on Pokémon Legends: Z-A and live service games like Pokémon TCG Pocket and Pokémon GO.
