GKIDS, the Academy Award-winning animation producer and distributor, has secured the North American distribution rights for the animated film COLORFUL STAGE! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing. The movie, based on the popular rhythm game HATSUNE MIKU: COLORFUL STAGE!, will hit North American theaters on April 11.
The film is inspired by the 2020 rhythm game that features Hatsune Miku, a virtual idol known worldwide. Since its release, the game has gained immense popularity, amassing over 10 million users globally in just two years.
COLORFUL STAGE! brings an original story to the screen, featuring both new characters and virtual singers from the game. The original voice cast from the game will reprise their roles in the film.
Film Synopsis
The story follows Hoshino Ichika, a high school musician who can enter a mysterious realm known as “SEKAI.” Here, she and her friends express their emotions through music, alongside Hatsune Miku. After a live performance, Ichika encounters a new version of Miku, who struggles to connect with her audience through song. Miku must work together with others to find her voice and reclaim her ability to sing.
Production Details
The movie is produced by P.A. Works, the Japanese animation studio behind Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms and Komada: A Whisky Family. Directed by Hiroyuki Hata (Recently, My Sister Is Unusual; Happy Go Lily) and written by Yoko Yonaiyama (The Ancient Magus’ Bride; A Sign of Affection), the film features music from notable artists. The theme song, “Hajimari no Mirai,” is by 40mP and sasakure.UK, with Hatsune Miku on vocals. The ending song, “Worlders,” is composed by Jin, with an arrangement by TeddyLoid, and will be performed by all 26 characters from the original game.
Box Office and Release Information
Released in Japan on January 17, COLORFUL STAGE! debuted at #2 at the box office, grossing over 570 million yen.
This marks the first collaboration between GKIDS and CyberAgent, the company that owns the Hatsune Miku franchise.
