The Chinese animated film Ne Zha 2 continues to break records at the box office, showing no signs of slowing down. The film, which debuted just two weeks ago in China, has already become one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time, despite not yet being released internationally.
On its second Sunday, Ne Zha 2 surpassed $1.1 billion in China, and by Monday, it had crossed the $1.16 billion mark, making it the sixth-highest-grossing animated film ever. It is now ranked among the top 40 highest-grossing films globally.
The film has outperformed iconic animated titles such as Moana 2, Toy Story 3, and Toy Story 4, and on Monday, it overtook the Minions franchise’s lifetime earnings, securing its spot as one of the six highest-grossing animated films in history. Ne Zha 2 is expected to reach the $1.2 billion milestone today. Notably, it is on track to become the highest-grossing film in a single country, surpassing Star Wars: Episode VI – The Force Awakens, which previously held the record with $936 million in North America. Some estimates, including those from Maoyan, suggest Ne Zha 2 could even surpass $2 billion in China alone.
At this pace, the film is set to outgross Inside Out 2, which has earned $1.6 billion globally, making Ne Zha 2 the highest-grossing animated film of all time—without any earnings from international markets. Only six films in history have crossed the $2 billion mark globally, with three of them directed by James Cameron. These include Avatar ($2.9 billion), Avengers: Endgame ($2.7 billion), Avatar: The Way of Water ($2.3 billion), Titanic ($2.2 billion), Avengers: Infinity War ($2 billion), and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($2 billion).
Ne Zha 2 is now the highest-grossing Chinese film of all time. Made on a reported budget of $80 million—less than The Super Mario Bros. Movie—it surpassed the previous record-holder, The Battle of Lake Changjin, just days ago. The film also quickly outpaced its predecessor’s total of $742 million, breaking the milestone in mere days. Released during the popular Chinese New Year period, Ne Zha 2 will begin its international rollout on Friday.
With its remarkable success, the film is set to continue making waves at the global box office.
