New Character Trailer for André Grandier Released for The Rose of Versailles Anime Movie

The upcoming The Rose of Versailles anime movie, produced by MAPPA, has unveiled a new character trailer showcasing André Grandier. Set to hit theaters in Japan on January 31, 2025, the film has been generating significant buzz among fans of the classic historical romance.

Directed by Ai Yoshimura, with a script by Tomoko Konparu, character designs by Mariko Oka, and music composed by Hiroyuki Sawano and KOHTA YAMAMOTO, the film’s production team is stacked with talent. The main trailer was released back in November 2024, adding to the anticipation.

In addition to André’s trailer, character promos for Marie Antoinette and Oscar François de Jarjayes were also previously shared. André is portrayed as a man with an unwavering determination, driven by a deep, single-minded love. His character is voiced by Toshiyuki Toyonaga in the Japanese version of the film.

Based on the iconic manga series by Riyoko Ikeda, The Rose of Versailles originally ran from May 1972 to December 1973, pioneering the shojo genre. The 1979 anime adaptation, animated by TMS Entertainment, was directed by Tadao Nagahama and Osamu Dezaki and aired on Nippon TV for 40 episodes.

The film’s official synopsis reads: “Oscar François de Jarjayes, raised as the ‘son’ and heir to her family’s military legacy, lives her life disguised as a man. Marie Antoinette, the graceful Austrian princess who is set to become the Queen of France, arrives in Versailles, where her fate intertwines with Oscar’s. Alongside them is André Grandier, Oscar’s devoted servant and childhood friend, and Hans Axel von Fersen, a handsome Swedish count. Together, their destinies unfold against the backdrop of the tumultuous 18th-century French court.”

The Rose of Versailles has had a lasting cultural impact, increasing interest in French tourism among Japanese audiences, and even earning Riyoko Ikeda the prestigious French “Legion of Honor” award in 2009. The movie adaptation, announced in September 2022, marks a long-awaited return to the beloved series, more than 40 years after the original anime aired.
