Jujutsu Kaisen: The Fate of the Big 3 Clans at the End of the Series

by Hazel

Jujutsu Kaisen has introduced the concept of the Big Three Families, three of the most powerful and influential clans in the Jujutsu Society. These families wielded tremendous political power and produced some of the strongest sorcerers in the world of JJK. However, as the series progressed, the fates of these families unfolded in ways that shocked fans. Let’s take a look at what happened to each of them.

The Fate of the Zenin Clan

By far, the Zenin Clan met the most devastating end in Jujutsu Kaisen. This fate, while tragic, was not entirely unearned. The Zenin family’s downfall came at the hands of a single person: Maki Zenin. Maki was destined to become one of the strongest characters in the series, but initially, her goal was to change her family’s archaic ways. However, she quickly realized that the Zenin family’s system was too entrenched in its own traditions to change.

Instead of reforming the family, Maki severed all ties with them and embarked on a mission to wipe out the Zenin Clan after unlocking her true powers—powers awakened by the sacrifice of her sister. With her newfound strength, Maki became unstoppable, eliminating anyone who stood in her way. Her power grew to rival that of Toji Fushiguro, and it’s even hinted that she may have surpassed him in the end.

The Zenin Clan ceased to exist long before the series concluded, with only a few remnants left. Maki, who survived, and Megumi, her nephew, are among the last known survivors. In the epilogue, it’s revealed that Maki has two grandchildren who carry the Zenin bloodline. However, the clan itself is gone, reduced to a mere memory.

The Fates of the Gojo and Kamo Clans

While the Zenin Clan was decimated, the fates of the Gojo and Kamo Clans were also complicated, but less conclusive.

The Kamo Clan: The End of an Era?

The Kamo Clan’s fate is a bit murkier. Initially, the clan wielded significant influence, but the details surrounding their decline are less explored in the series. Noritoshi Kamo, once the heir to the clan, saw his role diminish after being removed from his position as successor halfway through the story. His importance continued to fade, and by the end of the series, he had taken his family abroad, essentially marking the clan’s decline.

Kenjaku, the final known leader of the Kamo Clan, was killed by Yuta Okkotsu, effectively ending the clan’s legacy. While there may still be unknown members of the Kamo Clan out there, it’s unlikely that the clan will ever regain its former prominence, and fans have not seen any new characters who would lead it forward.

The Gojo Clan: A Surprising Turn

The Gojo Clan, on the other hand, suffered a significant blow with the death of Satoru Gojo during the Shinjuku Showdown. His death caused the clan to lose its primary source of power, and logically, one would expect the Gojo family to fall apart with his passing. However, by the year 2035, it’s revealed that the Gojo Clan has taken a new direction under the leadership of Yuta Okkotsu, Gojo’s protege.

Yuta’s connection to Gojo, both through blood and mentorship, allowed him to step up as the acting head of the clan. While the Gojo Clan’s power had dwindled after Satoru’s death, it seems that Yuta was able to preserve the family’s legacy. In fact, by 2080, the Gojo Clan’s premises are still intact, suggesting that it’s the only Big Three family to survive in any meaningful capacity.

The future of the Gojo Clan remains uncertain. With Yuta in charge and still alive, the clan might continue to exist under his leadership. However, much of its future depends on whether Yuta has children and what happens to the family after his eventual death.

What’s Next for the Big 3 Families?

With two of the Big Three Families destroyed and the Gojo Clan hanging by a thread, the future of these legendary families is unclear. The Gojo Clan is the only one left standing, and its involvement in future Jujutsu Kaisen stories would likely come through characters like Yuta Okkotsu and possibly his descendants.

However, with the story of Jujutsu Kaisen drawing to a close, there’s little indication that the author, Gege Akutami, plans to continue exploring these families in future arcs. As he has stated, the series has reached its natural conclusion, meaning that the Gojo Clan’s future—and the legacy of the Big Three Families—is, for the most part, sealed.

The final volume of Jujutsu Kaisen is scheduled for release in Japan on December 25, 2024, with the English version following in 2025. It’s clear that the story of the Big Three Families has come to an end.
