UK-based band Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs has announced the release of their highly anticipated fifth studio album, Death Hilarious, set to drop on April 4 via Missing Piece Records in North America and Rocket Recordings for the rest of the world. To accompany the announcement, the band has unveiled a grotesque and bizarre animated video for their new single, Stitches.
A Grotesque Animated Video
The animated video for Stitches, directed by Ben Faircloth, showcases the band members being mutated and mutilated by bizarre, hybrid creatures from various dimensions of nightmares. The unsettling visuals align with the song’s themes of vulnerability and emotional chaos.
Stitches Delves Into Vulnerability
Frontman Matt Baty shared insights about the new single, explaining that Stitches contrasts with the typical image of bravado and machoism often associated with rock music. Instead, it offers an expression of vulnerability, grappling with anxiety and the pressures of societal expectations. “It’s about those familiar pangs of anxiety I wrestle with while butting heads with personal struggles,” Baty noted.
Stitches follows the release of Detroit, another single from the upcoming album. The latter was widely praised by outlets like BrooklynVegan, Glide Magazine, and Consequence, with the latter naming it their “Heavy Song of the Week.”
A More Hostile Sound on Death Hilarious
While their previous album, Land of Sleeper, was designed as an immersive headphone experience, Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs sought to create a more direct and aggressive sound on Death Hilarious. “We wanted it to be a slap in the face,” said producer and guitarist Sam Grant. The band’s experiences playing numerous live shows contributed to the raw energy and intensity found on the album.
With influences ranging from doom metal to post-metal, Death Hilarious delivers a diverse and punishing sound that takes listeners on a journey through Sabbathian doom and minimalist noise rock.
Lyrics Born From Anxiety
Baty also shared that the album’s lyrics came from a period of personal struggle. At one point, he questioned whether he would ever be able to write lyrics again. However, he eventually embraced the anxiety and used it as inspiration for the album’s content. “After a while, I realized this is my muse,” he recalled. “I decided to give all these thoughts an avenue to release themselves, in the hope of exorcising them.”
Previous Success and Upcoming Tour
In late 2023, the band released a special vinyl of their explosive KEXP session, which has now surpassed one million views on YouTube. Death Hilarious follows Land of Sleeper, which was widely acclaimed by critics. The Guardian praised it for its “Black Sabbath-esque doom riffs” and its ability to draw in listeners who may have overlooked recent hard rock history.
