The first trailer for Yoshitoshi Shinomiya’s debut anime movie, A New Dawn, has been unveiled. Shinomiya, known for his work as a background artist on acclaimed films like Your Name and The Garden of Words by Makoto Shinkai, is stepping into the role of director with this project.
The trailer, shared through the official social media channels of A New Dawn, highlights the film’s three main characters and their connection to the Taitou Fireworks factory. The teaser presents stunning visuals that resemble watercolor paintings, adding an artistic depth to the film. A New Dawn is a co-production between Japan’s Asmik Ace and France’s Miyu Productions.
Shinomiya, who has worked on various projects including Children Who Chase Lost Voices and Cardfight!! Vanguard, is both directing and writing A New Dawn for Studio Outrigger. The film, which draws inspiration from the landscape changes in Japan following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, was also previewed at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
The official description from the Cannes preview reads: “The Obinata Fireworks Shop Factory is facing the threat of administrative confiscation. Six years after Keitaro has isolated himself in the abandoned factory, making fireworks in search of his missing father, the film tells the story of three young people who face extreme weather, disasters, and environmental challenges to find their identities.”
In an April 2024 interview with Variety, Shinomiya explained the idea for A New Dawn began in 2016. He recalled a moment when his child, looking out the car window, pointed out the sea. The sight of solar panels through the trees resembled the water’s surface, which made Shinomiya think about the changing landscapes of Japan. “I thought, ‘This is a new scenery of Japan,’” he said, describing how the moment sparked the idea for the film.
Shinomiya further explained how his research for the movie led him to discover the surprising similarities between materials used in Japanese painting and those used in fireworks before the Edo period. “Even in today’s world, there is a connection between traditional crafts from 100 or 200 years ago and modern life,” he added.
A New Dawn is set to be released in Japan in 2025.
