A Year in the Making

Shuko Nemoto, who wrote the script for the series, reflected on the challenges and rewards of creating the show, especially given the pandemic’s restrictions. “Because of the pandemic, I couldn’t meet with Director Misato or the producers in person,” Nemoto explained. “But we connected remotely each week, carefully building this together. The project is filled with love for the world of My Melody, beloved by people of all ages. I believe everyone, from adults to children, will have favorite scenes and lines.”

Expanding Sanrio’s Animation Universe

My Melody & Kuromi will follow Netflix’s successful stop-motion series Pokémon Concierge, which is set to return for a second season. The streaming service continues to expand its portfolio of Sanrio-based shows, adding to popular titles like Aggretsuko and Gudetama: An Eggcellent Adventure. With a growing trend of anime adaptations centered around mascot characters, such as Chiikawa and Bananya, My Melody & Kuromi marks another significant step for Sanrio characters in the animated world. Additionally, Production I.G., WIT Studio’s sister company, recently announced a Rilakkuma anime, further highlighting the growing appeal of these beloved characters.
