Creative Oversight by SS Rajamouli’s Collaborators
Veteran screenwriter V Vijayendra Prasad, father of acclaimed filmmaker SS Rajamouli, has overseen the creative adaptation of the film. Known for his contributions to major blockbusters such as Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), as well as Rajamouli’s Baahubali series and RRR (2022), Prasad’s involvement has added a layer of anticipation for this re-release. His expertise in storytelling has been instrumental in refining the film’s presentation for a new generation of viewers.
A Film with Lasting Impact
Directed by Yugo Sako, Ram Mohan, and Koichi Sasaki, Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama blends Japanese animation techniques with an Indian cultural and spiritual narrative. The film was originally screened at the 24th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in 1993, though it wasn’t initially released in cinemas. It gained a significant following when it was later broadcast on Indian television in the early 2000s. The film features voices from prominent Indian actors, including Arun Govil as Rama, Namrata Sawhney as Sita, and Amrish Puri as Raavan. The late Shatrughan Sinha narrates the epic story, lending a gravitas to the production that has resonated with generations of fans.
Upcoming Ramayana Adaptations
In addition to the 4K remaster of Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama, another major adaptation of the Ramayana is in the works. Filmmaker Nitesh Tiwari is set to direct a two-part live-action series, featuring Ranbir Kapoor as Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, and Yash as Ravana. Co-produced by Tiwari, Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus, and Yash, the two films will release during Diwali in 2026 and 2027, respectively.
