Crunchyroll Announces Ghost of Tsushima: Legends Anime Series, Set to Premiere in 2027

Crunchyroll, in collaboration with Aniplex, Sony Music, and PlayStation Productions, has officially confirmed the production of an anime series based on Ghost of Tsushima and its Ghost of Tsushima: Legends multiplayer mode. The series is slated to premiere exclusively on Crunchyroll in 2027, promising to bring the rich narrative and immersive world of the popular video game franchise to a broader audience.

The anime will be directed by Takanobu Mizuno, best known for his work on Star Wars: Visions – “The Duel,” with Gen Urobuchi, the acclaimed writer behind Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Fate/Zero, handling the story composition. The animation will be produced by Kamikaze Douga, a studio known for its distinctive visual style. Sony Music will partner to provide the music and soundtrack for the series, though additional details about the cast and further production staff remain under wraps.

The Ghost of Tsushima game, originally developed by Sucker Punch Productions, debuted on the PlayStation 4 in July 2020. The PlayStation 5 version followed in 2021, and a Windows edition was released in 2024. Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, the multiplayer component of the game, was introduced later that year, offering co-op gameplay and expansive modes for fans of the original title.

Set during the Mongol invasion of Japan in 1274, the Ghost of Tsushima narrative follows Jin Sakai, one of the last surviving samurai, as he defies traditional combat strategies to fight for the freedom of Tsushima. The game’s cinematic approach and breathtaking world design earned it widespread critical acclaim and a strong fanbase.

In September 2024, Sucker Punch Productions confirmed the development of a sequel, Ghost of Yōtei, with a planned release in 2025.
