The Japanese box office saw significant shifts this week, with Attack on Titan The Movie: THE LAST ATTACK slipping to #4 in its fourth weekend. The film, which compiles the final chapters of Attack on Titan’s Final Season, earned 83.1 million yen (approximately US$554,100) from Friday to Sunday. With a total of 973 million yen (around US$6.48 million) in cumulative earnings, the film continues to perform strongly after its limited three-week run, which began on November 8.
Opening with 175,000 ticket sales, THE LAST ATTACK grossed 249.4 million yen (about US$1.59 million) in its first weekend. The 145-minute film, featuring enhanced 5.1ch surround sound, revisits key moments from the final season of the anime, with Linked Horizon’s song “Nisen-nen… Moshiku wa…. Niman-nen ato no Kimi e” setting the emotional tone. The film is a “brushed-up” edition of the anime’s two final chapters, Part 1 and Part 2, which aired in 2023.
Meanwhile, Pui Pui Molcar the Movie: MOLMAX debuted at #5, bringing a fresh look to the popular franchise with a new 3D CG animation style. The film, directed by Mankyū with Tomoki Misato serving as chief supervisor, earned 57.9 million yen (approximately US$386,200) in its first three days. A sequel to the film has already been confirmed. The Pui Pui Molcar franchise, previously known for its stop-motion animation, continues to capture audiences with its quirky, adorable characters.
The 45th anniversary re-release of Hayao Miyazaki’s Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro also made an impact, landing at #9 in its opening week. The iconic 1979 anime film earned 55.3 million yen (around US$368,500) over its first three days, reigniting nostalgia among fans.
In other box office developments, Solo Leveling -ReAwakening-, a compilation film from the Solo Leveling anime’s first season paired with a preview of Solo Leveling Season 2, topped the mini-theater rankings. The compilation film for Yohane the Parhelion -SUNSHINE in the MIRROR opened at #2 in the same rankings.
Meanwhile, the Gintama on Theater 2D: Kintama-hen compilation film dropped out of the top 10 after its second weekend.
This week’s box office reflects the ongoing success of anime films in Japan, with both legacy titles like Lupin III and newer releases such as Pui Pui Molcar continuing to capture the public’s imagination.
