Iconic anime studios Sunrise and Khara have unveiled their highly anticipated collaboration: Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, a new anime series and film. The announcement was made on December 4 during the Gundam Conference WINTER 2024, where details about the project were revealed alongside its first-look trailer and character visuals.
A Seismic Collaboration
This marks the first collaboration between Sunrise, the studio behind the long-running Mobile Suit Gundam franchise, and Khara, the studio known for its work on the Rebuild of Evangelion film series. Directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki, known for his work on Evangelion, the new series promises to be a standout in the Gundam universe.
The series’ script is being handled by Yoji Enokido, a prolific writer whose credits include Evangelion, Sailor Moon, and Revolutionary Girl Utena. Additionally, Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno is lending his expertise to the project, ensuring that the anime will carry the distinct and recognizable style of his past works. The mechanical design for GQuuuuuuX is being managed by Ikuto Yamashita, known for his contributions to Evangelion and Gunbuster.
Plot and Cast Details
Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX is set to take place in a future where space colonies are the center of humanity’s existence. The story follows Amate Yuzuriha, a high school girl living a peaceful life in one such colony. However, her life is disrupted when she meets Nyaan, a war refugee caught up in the underground world of illegal mobile suit dueling. Amate enters the dueling competition under the alias “Machu,” piloting the powerful new mobile suit, GQuuuuuuX.
The narrative further intensifies as an unidentified Mobile Suit, bearing the iconic name “Gundam,” makes an appearance, pursued by both the space military and the police. This sets the stage for a conflict that will push the boundaries of space and warfare, with the world on the brink of a new era.
The main cast includes Tomoyo Kurosawa, known for Sound! Euphonium and Akudama Drive, voicing Amate Yuzuriha. Yui Ishikawa, best known for her role in Attack on Titan and Violet Evergarden, will voice Nyaan, while Shimba Tsuchiya, from Haikyuu!! and O Maidens in Your Savage Season, plays Shuji Ito.
Premiere and Distribution
Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX will debut as a film in 373 theaters across Japan on January 17, 2025. The film will serve as the first step in the broader launch of the GQuuuuuuX series. Tickets for the film will go on sale starting December 13.
The film’s distribution will be handled by Toho and Bandai Namco Filmworks, with its theater rollout comparable to some of the most successful anime films of recent years. For context, Spy x Family: Code White initially screened in 432 theaters, and Demon Slayer: Mugen Train opened in 403 theaters.
