The rapidly rising Shonen Jump series Kagurabachi, which has been hailed as the next big hit following popular manga such as Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia, is confirmed to be receiving an anime adaptation, according to a recent report by Toyokeizai. This news has sent waves of excitement throughout the anime community as fans eagerly await details about the series’ expansion to the small screen.
The adaptation will be produced by Shochiku and CyberAgent, with animation by CyberAgent’s studio, Cygames Pictures. However, specifics regarding the anime’s release date and streaming platform have yet to be revealed. Both CyberAgent and Shochiku declined to provide further confirmation or details on the matter. Nevertheless, the choice of Cygames Pictures, a relatively lesser-known studio compared to giants like MAPPA, Bones, and Pierrot, has raised some eyebrows.
A Strategic Decision: Risk Management and Studio Diversity
The decision to work with Cygames Pictures rather than more established studios, such as MAPPA (responsible for Chainsaw Man and Jujutsu Kaisen), Bones (My Hero Academia), or Pierrot (Naruto and Bleach), appears to be motivated by risk management. According to an unnamed anime producer quoted in the Toyokeizai report, the move could be part of a broader strategy to decentralize production across different studios. This decision comes after concerns over overburdening a single studio with multiple major works, as seen with MAPPA’s involvement in Jujutsu Kaisen, which has faced significant production issues due to tight deadlines and strenuous working conditions.
“The aim here may have been to avoid overloading a single studio,” the producer explained, adding that diversifying the production responsibilities would reduce the strain on animators. This strategic approach has been seen as necessary following challenges in productions like Blue Lock Season 2 by 8-bit, which struggled with high-profile releases this year.
Cygames Pictures Grows in Influence
Despite its relatively recent entry into the anime industry, Cygames Pictures has proven itself with notable releases such as Uma Musume and Brave Bang Bravern!, both of which have earned critical acclaim and box office success in Japan. Looking ahead, 2025 is shaping up to be a significant year for the studio, with the debut of original projects like Apocalypse Hotel, and anime adaptations of high-selling manga series such as Uma Musume Cinderella Gray and The Summer Hikaru Died. These titles are expected to make waves, with The Summer Hikaru Died recently surpassing three million copies in circulation, marking a significant milestone in manga sales.
CyberAgent, which owns Cygames Pictures, is heavily investing in expanding its anime portfolio. Not only is it working on major projects like Hatsune Miku’s Colorful Stage! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing, but it is also a key member of the production committee behind Oshi no Ko. Shochiku, which has a long-standing history of distributing iconic anime, including Gundam series, will handle distribution for the Miku film, further solidifying the partnership’s potential.
Kagurabachi: A Rising Star in Shonen Manga
Kagurabachi has quickly become one of the most anticipated anime adaptations of the decade. The manga, written and illustrated by Takeru Hokazon, has garnered significant attention, surpassing one million copies in circulation with just four volumes. This remarkable achievement places it on par with other Shonen Jump heavyweights like Jujutsu Kaisen. VIZ Media also licensed the series for North American release, marking one of the fastest releases in the company’s history.
The story follows Chihiro Rokuhira, a young boy who trains under his father to become a swordsmith. After a tragic event shakes his world, Chihiro embarks on a quest for revenge. Guided by clues left by a ruthless yakuza organization, he confronts the Hishaku, a deadly group of sorcerers that may be behind his father’s death. As Chihiro seeks justice, Kagurabachi weaves a tale of vengeance, betrayal, and the pursuit of truth, striking a chord with readers worldwide.
As anticipation continues to build, fans of the manga are eagerly awaiting more news on the anime’s development, including casting, release schedules, and any additional details that may surface in the coming months.
Stay tuned for updates on this exciting new chapter for Kagurabachi as it transitions from page to screen.
