Netflix has confirmed that the highly anticipated anime adaptation of Junji Ito’s Uzumaki horror manga will be available to stream across Asia starting December 20.
The four-episode mini-series, which originally premiered on Adult Swim’s Toonami block in the U.S. on September 28, concluded its run on October 19. In addition to its Toonami broadcast, the anime is also available for streaming on Max. Viewers can purchase the series digitally through platforms such as Amazon, Google Play, iTunes Store, Microsoft Store, and VUDU.
Originally announced for a 2020 debut on Toonami, the Uzumaki anime faced multiple delays before finally premiering in September 2024. The series was initially postponed to 2021 and again to October 2022 before being delayed once more in June 2022.
Directed by Hiroshi Nagahama, known for his work on Mushi-Shi, the series is produced by Studio Drive and Studio Akatsuki, with co-production by Production I.G. USA and Adult Swim. The soundtrack for the anime is composed by Colin Stetson, renowned for his work on Hereditary.
The anime is based on Ito’s 1998-1999 manga, which follows the eerie events that unfold in a town where strange occurrences centered around a spiral shape begin to take hold. The manga was first released in three volumes by Viz Media between 2007 and 2008, followed by an omnibus edition.
Uzumaki also inspired a live-action film in 2000, starring Eriko Hatsune and Fan Fhi. The release of the anime brings a new adaptation to the horror classic for fans around the world.
