Fans hoping for more episodes of the Netflix anime Scott Pilgrim Takes Off were met with disappointing news this week. Bryan Lee O’Malley, the creator of Scott Pilgrim, confirmed that the show will not return for a second season, effectively ending the series after its debut run.
In a social media post, O’Malley reflected on the success of the show’s first season, marking its one-year anniversary. “It was an honor to work with all of the cast & staff around the world. It was like conducting a symphony orchestra every day,” O’Malley wrote. “From the moment [writer/producer] BenDavid Grabinski sparked the idea, the project felt like a one-of-a-kind miracle.”
Despite the enthusiasm surrounding the series, O’Malley explained that Scott Pilgrim Takes Off was always intended to be a standalone season. “We only intended one season and called in a lot of favors to make it happen, so making more would have been nearly impossible,” he added. “Still, I know some of you have been holding out hope.”
The anime adaptation of Scott Pilgrim, which premiered on Netflix in 2023, was notable for reuniting the entire voice cast from Edgar Wright’s 2010 live-action film. Stars including Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, and Chris Evans reprised their roles, bringing the beloved characters of Scott, Ramona, and the rest of Sex Bob-omb to animated life.
Though the show won’t continue, it still earned praise from critics. The A.V. Club’s William Hughes gave it a B+, noting that the anime’s shift in structure, moving away from the video game-inspired format of the original graphic novels, made it a unique and enjoyable adaptation.
As fans say goodbye to the series after just eight episodes, many will hold on to the memories of what Scott Pilgrim Takes Off offered, even if there will be no more seasons.
In a world where shows are often retracted or pulled without warning, O’Malley’s announcement adds a finality that some fans may find bittersweet. But at least for now, the Scott Pilgrim anime will live on in those eight episodes, for however long Netflix keeps them available.
