The iconic 1980s manga Cat’s Eye, created by City Hunter author Tsukasa Hojo, is set to receive a new anime adaptation in 2025. The series, originally serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump, will be available on Disney Plus’s Star brand.

In addition to the new anime, it has been announced that the cover of the original 1983-1984 TV anime’s opening theme song, “CAT’S EYE,” will be performed by popular artist Ado. The song, originally by Anri, has been reinterpreted by Ado, with a special teaser featuring her version of the track now streaming.

Ado expressed her excitement about the project, saying, “With the greatest respect, I covered the original theme song, ‘CAT’S EYE,’ under the arrangement of Yuki Hayashi-san. When I sang the song, I respected Anri-san and mixed her 80’s singing style with my own colors. It’s a great honor to be involved as a singer in a beloved and legendary work that has returned with renewed brilliance. We hope this song brings both new and nostalgic feelings. Let’s enjoy the new series of Cat’s Eye together!”

The original Cat’s Eye manga was serialized from September 1981 to January 1985, totaling 18 tankobon volumes. The story centers around a mysterious art thief known as Cat’s Eye, who targets the works of European painter Michael Heinz. Detective Toshio Utsumi, determined to catch the elusive thief, repeatedly fails, much to the frustration of his superiors. Unbeknownst to him, his girlfriend, Hitomi Kisugi, who operates a café named Cat’s Eye, is actually one of the thieves, alongside her sisters.

The first TV anime adaptation aired in 1983-1984, spanning 36 episodes, followed by a second season, Cat’s Eye 2, which ran for 37 episodes in 1984-1985. The series remains a standout in the 80s anime landscape, continuing to captivate audiences with its mix of action, mystery, and romance.

Coamix, which is releasing the English edition of the Cat’s Eye manga via its MangaHotto app, describes the plot as follows: “A mysterious art thief named Cat’s Eye exclusively goes after the works of European painter Michael Heinz. Detective Toshio Utsumi fails to arrest Cat’s Eye at every turn, getting scolded by his boss and facing possible demotion. Toshio’s girlfriend, Hitomi Kisugi, who runs a café near the precinct, is always there to listen to his gripes and offer support. Little does he know, Hitomi and her sisters are actually Cat’s Eye.”

With a new anime adaptation on the horizon, fans of the classic series can look forward to a modern update on this legendary manga.
