‘Scott Pilgrim Takes Off’ Anime Canceled After One Season at Netflix

by Hazel

The anime series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, which premiered on Netflix in 2023, has officially been canceled after just one season. The series, based on Bryan Lee O’Malley’s iconic graphic novels, featured the return of the original cast from the 2010 live-action film, including Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona Flowers, Brie Larson as Envy Adams, Chris Evans as Lucas Lee, and Brandon Routh as Todd Ingram.

Despite the star-studded cast and high expectations, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off struggled to capture the same magic as its live-action predecessor. For some viewers, the anime’s tone and storytelling did not resonate, leading to disappointment and limited engagement after the first episode.

Bryan Lee O’Malley, the creator of the Scott Pilgrim series, confirmed the cancellation on social media. In a heartfelt message, O’Malley reflected on the experience, thanking the cast and crew for their dedication and hard work. “It’s been one year since Scott Pilgrim Takes Off came out. It was an honor to work with all of the cast & staff around the world. It was like conducting a symphony orchestra every day,” O’Malley shared on Twitter.

He further explained that the series was always intended to be a one-season project, with the team pulling together considerable resources to bring it to life. “From the moment @bdgrabinski sparked the idea, the project felt like a one-of-a-kind miracle,” O’Malley added. “We were recently informed that the show will NOT return. As you know, we only intended one season, and called in a lot of favors to make it happen, so making more would have been nearly impossible.”

In his final remarks, O’Malley expressed his apologies to fans, particularly those who were hoping for a continuation. “Sorry to all Matthew fans and Gideon fans, I know you will suffer the most,” he concluded.
