10 Pokémon Ash Ketchum Should Have Used More in the Anime, Ranked

by Hazel

Ash Ketchum, the beloved Pokémon Trainer, has had countless adventures since his debut in the anime. From his first encounter with Pikachu to his journeys across various regions, Ash has captured and trained a vast array of Pokémon. However, not all of these Pokémon received the attention they deserved in battle. Many of Ash’s companions, particularly older team members, saw limited action after their initial introductions. Here are 10 Pokémon that, despite their potential, were underutilized in the anime.

10. Buizel – A Water-Type with Untapped Potential

Introduced during Ash’s journey through the Sinnoh region, Buizel was a speedy and agile Water-type Pokémon known for its impressive combat skills. Initially belonging to Dawn, Buizel was traded to Ash after its love for battling became evident. Although Buizel was a powerful fighter, it was underused after the Sinnoh region, despite its versatility and desire to train. It would have benefited from more appearances, allowing it to evolve and showcase its full potential.

9. Muk – A Poison-Type Pokémon with Strength

Muk, the evolved form of Grimer, is a powerful Poison-type that Ash caught during his Kanto adventure. Despite its imposing presence and ability to absorb damage, Muk was rarely utilized in battle. While Ash’s Muk was affectionate and prone to leaving behind a trail of sludge, it could have been a formidable asset had it seen more combat opportunities. Its battle prowess and unique ability to take on powerful foes were largely unexplored.

8. Heracross – A Bug/Fighting-Type with Strong Battle Skills

Ash’s Heracross, his first capture in the Johto region, was a capable Bug/Fighting-type that assisted him in several battles. Known for its strength and its fondness for sap, Heracross displayed solid battle skills, yet it was often sidelined in favor of other team members. With more training and battles, Heracross could have become an even more reliable and powerful ally.

7. Totodile – A Cheerful Water-Type with Limited Appearances

Totodile was a playful Water-type Pokémon that Ash caught early in his Johto journey. While it provided comic relief and was a loyal team member, Totodile’s appearances became sparse as the series progressed. Its potential as a skilled battler was not fully explored, especially since it had a strong bond with Ash and could have been a significant contributor in future battles.

6. Primeape – A Fiery Fighting-Type with Untapped Strength

Primeape, the evolved form of Mankey, was introduced as a powerful fighter with a volatile temper. Although it showcased immense strength early on, Ash left Primeape to train with another Trainer, effectively cutting its potential short. The Fighting-type Pokémon could have benefited from further training and battles, possibly even evolving into the formidable Annihilape, a form introduced in later games.

5. Pidgeot – A Long-Lost Ally from Kanto

Pidgeot, one of Ash’s original companions, was his second Pokémon catch in the Kanto region. Though it evolved from Pidgeotto into the strong Normal/Flying-type, it was left behind during Ash’s travels. As a potential user of Mega Evolution, Pidgeot’s full capabilities were not explored. Despite a brief reunion in Pokémon Journeys, Pidgeot’s absence from Ash’s team was a missed opportunity for further growth and battles.

4. Goodra – A Dragon-Type Pokémon with Unfulfilled Potential

Goodra, the final evolution of Goomy, joined Ash’s team during his Kalos journey. While Goodra was a loyal and loving companion, its potential as a Dragon-type powerhouse was underutilized. Despite powerful moments, such as helping Ash against Team Flare, Goodra’s full capabilities were not fully explored. A more prominent role in battles could have seen Goodra reach even greater heights.

3. Bayleef – A Grass-Type with Strong Combat Skills

Bayleef, Ash’s second Johto Pokémon, evolved from Chikorita and was a close companion throughout the region. Despite her affection for Ash, Bayleef’s strength was not fully realized in battle. While it was used effectively in several early Johto episodes, Bayleef did not receive the attention it deserved. Its potential to evolve into a Meganium and its battle capabilities were left unexplored, making it one of Ash’s most underappreciated team members.

2. Larvitar – A Shy Pokémon with Great Potential

Larvitar, the baby Rock/Dark-type Pokémon, was introduced during Ash’s Johto journey. Though initially shy, Larvitar showed great potential as it grew into a strong Pokémon. However, due to its need to return to its home on Mt. Silver, Larvitar was never given the chance to evolve into the powerful Tyranitar. The missed opportunity to train and develop this Pokémon’s potential remains one of the series’ more significant what-ifs.

1. Gible – A Dragon/Ground-Type with Great Promise

Gible, the Dragon/Ground-type from the Sinnoh region, is one of the most underutilized Pokémon in Ash’s roster. Despite being a rare and powerful Pokémon that could evolve into the formidable Garchomp, Gible never had the chance to fully evolve. With its strong fighting potential and its connection to the Dragon-type, Gible could have become one of Ash’s most formidable allies, but its growth was cut short due to its limited battle appearances.

These Pokémon, though memorable and beloved, were often overlooked in Ash’s extensive journey. Each of them had unique qualities and abilities that could have made them even more important members of Ash’s team, had they been used more effectively in battles.
