The much-anticipated Attack on Titan The Movie: THE LAST ATTACK dominated the Japanese box office during its opening weekend, securing the #1 spot with an impressive performance. The compilation film, which features a reworked edition of Attack on Titan Final Season’s final chapters, sold 175,000 tickets and grossed ¥249,435,720 (approximately $1.59 million USD) within its first three days in theaters.
Released on Friday for a limited three-week engagement, the 145-minute film is presented with 5.1 surround sound and enhanced visuals, offering fans a refined version of the two parts of the Final Season finale. The film’s theme song, “Nisen-nen… Moshiku wa… Niman-nen ato no Kimi e” (To You in 2,000… or… 20,000 Years From Now) by Linked Horizon, returns to accompany the emotional final moments of the series.
The Final Season chapters, originally aired as two special episodes in 2023, also streamed in Japan as part of Attack on Titan The Final Season, episodes 88-94. The series made its U.S. debut on Toonami starting in January 2024.
“FUUTO PI” Film Debuts Strong at #5
Also making waves in the Japanese box office, Fūto Tantei: Kamen Rider Skull no Shōzō (FUUTO PI: Portrait of Kamen Rider Skull) premiered at #5, earning ¥80,114,875 (around $513,600 USD) over its first weekend. This prequel to the Kamen Rider W series explores the origins of the iconic character Kamen Rider Skull and connects to the FUUTO PI anime, which follows the Kamen Rider W sequel manga Fūto Tantei.
The film stars Kouji Kikkawa, who reprises his role as Sōkichi Narumi, a pivotal character in the Kamen Rider W universe, and also contributed the theme song “Niau Otoko ni Nare” (Become a Worthy Man). The film features new voice talent, including Kenjirō Tsuda as Sōkichi Narumi, Ayumu Murase as a young Shōtarō Hidari, and Satomi Satō as the villain Saeko Sonozaki/Taboo Dopant.
Directed by Yousuke Kabashima and produced by Studio KAI, the film brings together a seasoned crew, with scriptwriter Tatsuto Higuchi and animators Hidekazu Ebina and Kiyoshi Komatsubara returning from the FUUTO PI series.
“Atashino!” Live-Action Film Opens at #8
The live-action film Atashino! (Mine!), based on the manga by Momoko Kōda, opened at #8 in its first weekend, earning ¥51,305,260 (about $328,900 USD). The film follows the romantic journey of Akoko Sekikawa, a determined high school girl, as she navigates her feelings for a popular boy in her class, while dealing with complications involving her close friend Mitsuki Taniguchi.
Starring Miho Watanabe from the idol group Hinatazaka46 and Masaya Kimura from INI, the film also features performances by Nagisa Saitō and Jūtarō Yamanaka. Directed by Mitsunori Yokobori, the film is accompanied by a soundtrack featuring the theme song “Break of Dawn” by INI and an insert track “Cinnamon” by ChoQMay.
“Mobile Suit Gundam Seed” Continues to Draw Crowds
Meanwhile, the second special edition of Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM saw a decline in its box office ranking but still managed to earn ¥41,578,300 ($266,800 USD) in its second weekend. Despite slipping out of the top 10, the film’s cumulative earnings now stand at an impressive ¥5,301,101,120 (roughly $34 million USD) after 42 weeks of theatrical runs across multiple versions.
The success of these films highlights the continuing popularity of anime-based content in Japanese theaters, with Attack on Titan and Kamen Rider continuing to captivate audiences, while new releases like Atashino! also making an impact.
