The 2020 anime film Violet Evergarden: The Movie emerged as a winner in the New Anime category at the inaugural Dolby Cinema Japan Awards 2024. The announcement was made during the 37th Tokyo International Film Festival on October 31. In honor of the achievement, the film will return to theaters across Japan, screening at 10 Dolby Cinemas nationwide starting November 15.
Originally released in Japan in September 2020, Violet Evergarden: The Movie performed strongly, securing the #2 spot at the box office on its opening weekend. The film also made history as the first new Japanese anime film, as opposed to compilation films, to be shown in Dolby Cinema. It began screening at seven Dolby Cinema locations in Japan in November 2020, marking a significant milestone for anime films in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos formats.
Additionally, special recognition was given to Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron and the live-action film Godzilla Minus One, both of which received special awards for their outstanding contributions to the Japanese film industry. The Super Mario Bros. Movie also garnered the Dolby Cinema 3D Special Award for its exceptional use of immersive technology.
The Dolby Cinema Japan Awards were created to celebrate films and creators utilizing Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos technologies, spotlighting innovative works that contribute to the global advancement of Japan’s content industry.
