Box Office Update: Kitarō Tanjō and Voltes V Make Waves in Japan

In the latest box office rankings, Kitarō Tanjō: Gegege no Nazo Shinsei-ban (True Birth Version) has slipped from fifth to eighth place in its third weekend, earning approximately 53.3 million yen (about $351,500) from Friday to Sunday. This brings the film’s cumulative earnings to about 360 million yen (around $2.37 million).

The film debuted at number three during its opening weekend, selling nearly 97,700 tickets and grossing 156.3 million yen (around $1.05 million) within its first three days. Released in Japanese theaters on October 4, this new edition features approximately 327 retaken cuts and re-dubbed lines, carrying an R15+ rating, a shift from the original film’s PG12 rating. The initial version premiered in November 2023, where it earned 160.1 million yen (approximately $1.07 million) in its opening three days, ultimately grossing a total of 2.47 billion yen (about $16.79 million) by January 28.

Directed by Gō Koga of Gegege no Kitarō: Nippon Bakuretsu!! fame, and written by Hiroyuki Yoshino, the film is part of four significant projects commemorating the 100th anniversary of Shigeru Mizuki’s birth. Mizuki passed away in 2015 at the age of 93. Another notable project is the Akuma Kun anime, which premiered on Netflix in November 2023.

In other box office news, Voltes V: Legacy, the Filipino live-action remake of the classic Voltes V mecha anime, made its debut at number nine in Japan this weekend. The film opened on October 18 after previously screening in Philippine theaters in April 2023. The live-action film, Voltes V: Legacy – The Cinematic Experience, covered the first part of the series and later aired on the GMA-7 channel from May to September 2023.

The original anime series, which premiered in Japan in 1977, follows five young pilots who operate machines that combine to form the titular fighting mecha, Voltes V. Together, they combat the alien Boazanians, led by Prince Heinell. This series is part of director Tadao Nagahama’s “Romance Super Robot Trilogy.”

Additionally, Wonderful Precure! The Movie! Grand Adventure in a Thrilling Game World has dropped out of the top ten after six weekends in theaters. The original anime film Fureru, from the creative team behind Super Peace Busters, also exited the top ten in its third weekend.

Despite being out of the top ten, Mrs. Green Apple // The White Lounge in CINEMA, a concert tour screening from the band Mrs. Green Apple, earned 48.5 million yen (approximately $319,700) over the weekend, with total earnings of about 1.77 billion yen (around $11.64 million).

In the mini-theater rankings, Eiga Given: Umi e (Given The Movie: To the Sea) maintained its position at number one in its fifth weekend, grossing 33.8 million yen (approximately $222,900) and bringing its total to around 264.7 million yen (about $1.74 million) since its opening on September 20.
