The highly anticipated anime film adaptation of The Rose of Versailles has announced three new voice cast members ahead of its theatrical release in Japan on January 31, 2025. The newly added voices include Shunsuke Takeuchi as Alain de Soissons, Takuya Eguchi as Florian de Gerodelle, and Miyu Irino as Bernard Chatelet.

These actors join an impressive main cast featuring Miyuki Sawashiro as Oscar François de Jarjayes, Aya Hirano as Marie Antoinette, Toshiyuki Toyonaga as André Grandier, and Kazuki Kato as Hans Axel von Fersen. Directed by Ai Yoshimura, known for Kabukicho Sherlock, the film will have a screenplay by Tomoko Konparu, character designs by Mariko Oka, and music composed by Hiroyuki Sawano and KOHTA YAMAMOTO, both notable for their work on Attack on Titan Final Season. This film marks the latest project inspired by Riyoko Ikeda’s renowned historical romance manga, which was serialized in Shueisha’s Margaret magazine from May 21, 1972, to December 23, 1973, and has been published in English by Udon Entertainment. The manga previously led to a 1979-1980 TV anime series and a 1990 anime film, The Rose of Versailles: I’ll Love You As Long As I Live, produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha.

In addition to these adaptations, the manga has also inspired a 1979 live-action film titled Lady Oscar, a musical by the Takarazuka Revue Company, and several spin-offs. A pilot for a new anime movie was showcased at the Tokyo International Anime Fair in 2007.

The synopsis for the upcoming film reveals a gripping tale: Oscar François de Jarjayes, raised as the heir to a general, disguises herself as a man. The story unfolds in the opulent setting of late 18th century Versailles, as Oscar navigates her complex relationships with Marie Antoinette, her servant and childhood friend André Grandier, and the charming Swedish count, Hans Axel von Fersen, against the backdrop of a changing world.
