In a recent announcement, Niconico, a leading content distribution service in Japan operated by Kadokawa, revealed its ranking of the top 10 anime series for Fall 2024 based on viewership statistics. Topping the list is Dandadan, followed closely by Blue Box and the latest season of Re:Zero: Starting Life in Another World, highlighting the current favorites among Japanese audiences.
The rankings, as reported by PR Times, were determined using a combination of episode view totals and viewership data from live broadcasts. Dandadan, recognized as Shonen Jump’s latest hit, secured the number one position, with Blue Box, The Idolmaster Shiny Colors Season 2, and The Temptation of 2.5 Dimensions rounding out the top four. Notably, Re:Zero Season 3 is positioned as the fifth most viewed series. The complete rankings, from most to least popular, are as follows:
1. Dandadan
2. Blue Box
3. The iDOLM@STER Shiny Colors Season 2
4. 2.5 Dimensional Seduction
5. Re:Zero: Starting Life in Another World Season 3
6. Acro Trip
7. The Prince of Tennis II: U-17 World Cup Semifinal
8. How I Attended an All-Guy’s Mixer
9. I’ll Become a Villainess Who Goes Down in History
10. Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha (20th Anniversary Selection)
Dandadan, adapted from Tatsu Yukinobu’s popular manga and produced by Science Saru, has garnered comparisons to Jujutsu Kaisen. The narrative centers around Momo Ayase, a high school student with a belief in ghosts, and her classmate Okarun, who dismisses them in favor of aliens. Their journey to explore Japan’s notorious paranormal sites leads to unexpected supernatural encounters, resulting in Momo awakening her latent psychic abilities to assist Okarun. The first episode premiered on October 3, 2024.
Blue Box, a fresh entry from Weekly Shonen Jump’s slice-of-life sports genre, is produced by Telecom and TMS Entertainment. The story follows Taiki Inomata, a badminton player who sees himself as average, and Chinatsu Kano, a standout member of their school’s basketball team. As their paths cross, a budding romance develops against the backdrop of their preparation for national championships, capturing the nuances of young love.
Re:Zero: Starting Life in Another World, first released in 2016, continues to be a dominant force in the isekai genre. It ranks as the highest of only two isekai series on Niconico’s top 10 list. Produced by WHITE FOX, the series follows Subaru Natsuki, an ordinary high school student transported to a fantastical realm, where he encounters Emilia, a half-elf and royal candidate. Season 3 advances the plot as Emilia navigates the royal selection process amid brewing conflicts. Two episodes have been released as of October 15.
For fans outside Japan, Dandadan is available for streaming on Netflix and Crunchyroll, while Blue Box can be streamed exclusively on Netflix. All three seasons of Re:Zero: Starting Life in Another World are available on Crunchyroll.
