In an exciting announcement, Shueisha revealed on Friday that the popular manga Kowloon Generic Romance, created by Jun Mayuzuki, will be adapted into both a television anime and a live-action film, both scheduled to premiere in 2025. The official website for these projects is currently streaming a teaser trailer that showcases cast members and provides glimpses of both adaptations.
In the anime, Haruka Shiraishi takes on the role of Reiko Kujirai, a real estate agent navigating the complexities of Kowloon. Tomokazu Sugita co-stars as her colleague, Hajime Kudō.
In the live-action adaptation, the character of Reiko Kujirai is portrayed by Riho Yoshioka, known for her work in Blind and Anime Supremacy!, while Kōshi Mizukami, recognized for his role in Nina, My Love, plays Hajime Kudō.
Yen Press, the English-language publisher of the manga, describes the story as set in Kowloon Walled City, a dystopian environment filled with nostalgia where the past, present, and future intertwine. It follows the emotional and extraordinary lives of individuals working in this unique setting, particularly focusing on the romantic journey of real estate agent Reiko Kujirai.
Kowloon Generic Romance debuted in Shueisha’s Weekly Young Jump magazine in November 2019. The manga’s ninth volume was released in October 2023, with the tenth volume set to follow on October 18. The eighth volume was published by Yen Press on September 17.
Jun Mayuzuki is also known for the manga After the Rain, which initially appeared in Shogakukan’s Monthly Big Comic Spirits in 2014 and transitioned to Weekly Big Comic Spirits in 2016, concluding in March 2018. The series has been collected in ten volumes, with Vertical publishing the complete work in five omnibus editions. After the Rain was adapted into a 12-episode anime series that premiered in January 2018 and a live-action film that was released in May 2018.
