Hideaki Anno to Produce New ‘Space Battleship Yamato’ Anime Film

by Hazel

Hideaki Anno, the visionary creator behind Neon Genesis Evangelion, is set to embark on a new project within the realm of anime. Following his extensive work on the Shin Japan Hero Universe, which unites franchises such as Shin Godzilla (2016), Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0 Thrice Upon a Time (2021), Shin Ultraman (2022), and Shin Kamen Rider (2023), Anno is now focused on producing a film adaptation of the iconic Space Battleship Yamato.

While specifics regarding the upcoming film remain scarce, Anno has stated that this new project will take a different direction compared to the ongoing remakes initiated by Space Battleship Yamato 2199. The announcement came during a special 50th anniversary screening of the original series, where Anno revealed that his studio, Khara, has secured the necessary licensing approvals from the original rights holders.

Reflecting on his journey, Anno expressed deep gratitude for the influence Space Battleship Yamato has had on his career, stating, “If I had not encountered Space Battleship Yamato 50 years ago, I would not be where I am today.” He further articulated his commitment to the series, saying, “As long as I am involved with the Yamato series, I would like to spend the rest of my life creating interesting works that weave together the old and the new as much as possible and bequeath Space Battleship Yamato to future generations, with gratitude, respect and repayment to all the Yamato staff and cast.”

Yutaka Izubuchi, who served as chief director for the remake projects, will also contribute to this new endeavor.
