Background on the Project
This film adaptation was initially announced in September 2022 as part of the 50th anniversary celebration of The Rose of Versailles manga, which was serialized in Shueisha’s Margaret magazine from 1972 to 1973. The original series has inspired various adaptations, including a TV anime that aired from 1979 to 1980, a live-action film by Jacques Demy in 1979, and numerous musical productions by the Takarazuka Revue since 1974.
Udon Entertainment, the publisher of the manga’s English edition, summarizes the story as follows: Oscar François de Jarjayes, a noblewoman raised as a son by her father, serves as the commander of Marie Antoinette’s palace guard. Amidst the opulence of King Louis XVI’s court at Versailles, Oscar, along with her servant André, navigates the complex intrigues of France’s final royal regime.
