In celebration of the 130th birthday of Edogawa Rampo, widely regarded as the father of modern Japanese mystery novels, the Detective Conan anime is set to air a special two-part murder mystery. This event coincides with the legacy of Rampo, whose influential Kogoro Akechi detective stories have inspired countless Japanese readers, including Detective Conan creator Gōshō Aoyama.
The name of the series’ protagonist, Conan Edogawa, is a tribute to both Rampo and Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes. Notably, “Edogawa Rampo” is a pseudonym that cleverly plays on the name “Edgar Allan Poe,” pronounced in Japanese.
The official X (formerly Twitter) account for Detective Conan announced on September 20 that the two-episode special will be set in the real-life Edogawa Rampo Residence and will premiere on November 16 and 23 at 6 p.m. JST. A special visual promoting the episodes was also revealed, showcasing the character Conan Edogawa in an iconic pose reminiscent of Edogawa Rampo.
The promotional image features the tagline: “A great detective does not choose his era,” emphasizing the enduring influence of Rampo’s work. Fans are eager to see how Conan will navigate a case within the confines of his namesake’s home and whether he will emulate the distinctive poses of Rampo himself during the episodes.
