Tokyo, Japan – The official website for Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM has announced that the film has grossed over 5 billion yen (approximately 34.84 million USD) since its release on January 26, 2024. The film has attracted 3,005,829 admissions across Japan.
Initially, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM earned 4.82 billion yen (33.29 million USD) from 2.88 million admissions during its original theatrical run, which concluded on May 22. This remarkable performance makes it the highest-grossing film in the 45-year history of the Gundam franchise, surpassing Mobile Suit Gundam: Encounters in Space, which garnered 2.3 billion yen (15.89 million USD) back in 1982.
The film’s recent box office surge is attributed to the release of a special edition featuring over 500 updated scenes, which began screening in Japanese theaters on September 20. This special edition made a notable entry into the weekend box office rankings, securing the #9 spot for the period of September 20-22.
To celebrate surpassing the 5 billion yen milestone and reaching three million ticket sales, a new illustration has been released, showcasing the Strike Freedom Gundam Type II, Infinite Justice Gundam Type II, and the Black Knight Squad Cal-re.A.
The special edition will be screened in two parts: the first from September 20 to October 3, 2024, and the second from November 1 to 14. Each part will feature a unique epilogue scene. Additionally, the film’s DVD and Blu-ray will be released in Japan on December 25, 2024.
The film’s synopsis highlights ongoing conflicts in C.E.75, where independence movements and aggression from Blue Cosmos persist. In response, a global peace monitoring agency named COMPASS is established, with Lacus as its inaugural president. As members of COMPASS, Kira and his allies engage in various regional battles, while a newly formed nation, Foundation, proposes a joint operation against a Blue Cosmos stronghold.
