The theatrical journey of the LOOK BACK anime film, based on Tatsuki Fujimoto’s acclaimed one-shot, is coming to a close after a successful run in Japanese theaters. The final highlight of this theatrical release features a unique collaboration between Fujimoto and director Kiyotaka Oshiyama, who have created a special shikishi artwork depicting their characters.
Additionally, the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) announced that LOOK BACK will be featured in its animation section, alongside Naoko Yamada’s The Colors Within and Kuno/Yamashita’s Ghost Cat Anzu. The shikishi showcases Kyomoto, illustrated by Oshiyama, observing Fujino, drawn by Fujimoto, as she creates manga.
The TIFF animation lineup also includes several other notable films, such as A Few Moments of Cheers, Kurayukaba, and the world premiere of Make a Girl. The festival is scheduled to take place from October 28 to November 6 at various venues in Tokyo.
LOOK BACK is directed by Kiyotaka Oshiyama (FLIP FLAPPERS) at Studio Durian, where he also wrote the script and designed the characters. The film, released in Japan on June 28, 2024, features art direction by Kiyoshi Sameshima, music by haruka nakamura, and is distributed by Avex Pictures.
The U.S. release, set for October 4 through GKIDS, portrays the story of Fujino, a popular student recognized for her comic contributions to the class newspaper. When her teacher pairs her with Kyomoto, a reclusive artist, a rivalry blossoms over their artistic talents. However, jealousy gives way to a deeper connection as they discover their mutual love for drawing. This poignant adaptation of Fujimoto’s work promises to resonate with audiences, celebrating the trials of artistic ambition and the bonds forged through collaboration.
