In a recent blog post, Tite Kubo, the creator of Bleach, shared intriguing possibilities for three beloved characters to join the ranks of Soul Reapers. Over the years, Bleach has showcased significant power upgrades for its heroes, with Ichigo Kurosaki exemplifying this evolution as he transitioned from an ordinary high school student to a pivotal figure in the Soul Society.
Kubo revealed that Ichigo’s closest friends—Chad, Orihime, and Uryu—could potentially wield Zanpakuto if given the opportunity. He noted that they would need to undergo training with an Asauchi, a nameless sword that would eventually transform into their personalized Zanpakuto. While Uryu’s Quincy abilities differentiate him from Soul Reapers, Orihime and Chad also possess unique spiritual powers that could be further developed.
The notion of Ichigo’s friends gaining Soul Reaper abilities raises interesting questions about the dynamics of the series. While it would alter the landscape of Bleach by expanding the number of Earth-born Soul Reapers, it is unlikely that they could reach Ichigo’s power level, given his unique bloodline ties to the Soul Reapers, Quincies, and Hollows.
As the Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War saga progresses, fans can anticipate further exploration of Ichigo’s abilities. The third cour of the anime is set to premiere on October 5, available for streaming on Hulu and Disney+. Meanwhile, Kubo’s 2021 one-shot, “New Breathes From Hell,” hinted at a sequel, leaving fans eager for more developments in the Bleach universe.
