Netflix has just released the highly anticipated first teaser trailer for its upcoming anime series Leviathan, set to premiere on the streaming platform in 2025.
The teaser, which is devoid of dialogue and accompanied by a powerful orchestral score, introduces viewers to the series’ protagonists, Deryn Sharp and Prince Aleksander. The brief but striking footage captures their perilous journey through a world engulfed in war, hinting at the epic scale of the story.
The series is directed by Christophe Ferreira, known for his work on Eden, with celebrated composer Joe Hisaishi contributing original music. The soundtrack will also feature compositions by Nobuko Toda (Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045) and Kazuma Jinnouchi (Suzume, RWBY: Ice Queendom). The animation production is handled by the studio Orange.
Executive producers Justin Leach and Taiki Sakurai are spearheading the project, with Qubic Pictures overseeing the production.
The Leviathan anime is adapted from Scott Westerfeld’s 2009 novel of the same name, which is part of a trilogy including Behemoth (2010) and Goliath (2011), all illustrated by Keith Thompson.
Netflix describes the series as follows:
“Prince Aleksander, would-be heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, is on the run. Deryn Sharp is a commoner, disguised as a boy in the British Air Service. As World War I begins to erupt, Alek and Deryn’s paths cross in the most unexpected way… taking them on a fantastical, around-the-world adventure that will change both their lives forever.”
With this teaser, fans of the original books and anime enthusiasts alike are given a tantalizing glimpse of what promises to be an epic and visually stunning adaptation.
