Disney has officially announced that ‘Toy Story 5’ will be released on June 19, 2026.
The beloved Pixar franchise, which began in 1995, has captivated audiences with its heartwarming tales and iconic characters. The last installment, ‘Toy Story 4,’ was released in 2019.
Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, who have voiced Woody and Buzz Lightyear respectively in all four previous films, are expected to return for the fifth movie.
Disney CEO Bob Iger first revealed plans for ‘Toy Story 5’ in February 2023, though details were scarce at the time. In November 2023, Tim Allen disclosed on ‘The Tonight Show’ that both he and Hanks had been approached about reprising their roles.
“Bob Iger, head of Disney, said it was on and actually said it was going to happen,” Allen said. “They have reached out to Tom and I to reprise the roles. They’re not saying anything about it…You wonder if four was too many. Is five going to be too much?”
Allen also hinted at a promising script, noting, “According to the scuttlebutt, the writer that’s doing it wrote one of the better ones and said, ‘If I didn’t get this right, I wouldn’t do it.’ It could be a very, very interesting way to reunite it.”
The fourth film concluded with Woody parting ways with Buzz and the rest of the gang to stay with Bo Peep. The upcoming movie will reportedly reunite the iconic duo. Allen speculated that Andy, their original owner, might play a significant role in their reunion.
“I don’t know if this is where the story is going, but what if the whole story was through Andy as an adult?” Allen mused. “Andy sees that Buzz has got a hand missing and they’re selling these vintage toys, and Andy goes and gathers all the toys up. He has to go out and find each one of them and put them back together, bring them back to his house, and start the whole thing over again with his son…”
In addition to the main series, the ‘Toy Story’ universe expanded with the release of ‘Lightyear’ in 2022. This spinoff, which explored the origin story of Buzz Lightyear, featured Chris Evans as the voice of the titular character.
Fans eagerly await more details as the release date for ‘Toy Story 5’ approaches, hopeful for another memorable adventure with Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the beloved toy gang.
