‘Madoka Magica’ Director Akiyuki Shinbo Eyes New Anime Adaptation

by Hazel

Fourteen years after Puella Magi Madoka Magica reshaped the anime landscape, director Akiyuki Shinbo is preparing for a new project. While fans continue to revisit the iconic series, Shinbo has identified three potential titles for adaptation: Android Kikaider, Guerrilla High, and Babel II.

Although these titles are not globally recognized, a well-crafted anime adaptation could bring them into the spotlight. Android Kikaider, created by Shotaro Ishinomori (Kamen Rider), debuted in 1972. The story follows a guitar-playing robot who grapples with his desire to be human. The franchise has previously inspired a live-action tokusatsu series and a short anime adaptation, which aired on Adult Swim in the early 2000s.

Guerrilla High, a 1970 manga by Go Nagai, explores the lives of rebellious students who unite against a corrupt and oppressive school system. Unlike Android Kikaider, this title has never been adapted into an anime, making it a significant choice if Shinbo decides to bring it to the screen.

The third option, Babel II, is another 1970s manga, created by Mitsuteru Yokoyama. It tells the story of a young boy who learns he is the reincarnation of an alien named Babel. He joins forces with three powerful allies—a black panther, a pterodactyl, and a giant robot—to protect Earth from various threats. The story has been adapted twice into anime, with the most recent version, Babel II: Beyond Infinity, released in 2001.

Regardless of which project Shinbo selects, anticipation among fans remains high. Madoka Magica is renowned for its compelling storytelling, subversion of genre tropes, and unexpected plot twists. Many viewers hope his next work will capture the same level of intrigue and excitement. However, for now, fans will have to wait for the director’s final decision.
