Studio Ghibli, one of the most acclaimed animation studios in the world, has produced some of the most beloved films in cinematic history. Now, former Ghibli staff members are working on a new project, an anime titled Cocoon. The anime, which will be a single 60-minute episode, is set to air in March 2025.
Cocoon Staff and Cast
Cocoon* is based on a true story from World War II. Directed by Ina Yukimitsu at Studio Sasayuri, the anime features animation producer Hitomi Tateno and music composed by Kensuke Ushio. The cast includes Hikari Matsushima (known for One Piece) as Mayu, and Marika Ito as San. Additional cast members are expected to be announced soon.
The anime is adapted from the Cocoon manga by Machiko Kyō, which was serialized in Akita Shoten’s Elegance Eve magazine. The manga ran from March 26, 2009, to May 2010, and its chapters have been compiled into a single volume.
Story Overview
Set in the final months of the Pacific War, Cocoon follows two schoolgirls, San and Mayu, who live in Okinawa. The girls are unexpectedly drafted to assist wounded soldiers during the war. As nurses, they witness the horrors of battle. When they are ordered to die for their country, San and Mayu choose to escape. However, they end up on a tropical island that has been overtaken by the effects of war.
The story offers a unique and emotional narrative that is sure to resonate with viewers. With its compelling plot and stunning visuals, Cocoon promises to be a standout release. The influence of its talented staff, many of whom have Ghibli backgrounds, is evident in its animation.
