STUDIO4℃ has revealed ChaO, an upcoming anime feature that tells the story of an ordinary office worker who is suddenly asked to marry a mermaid princess. The film is set to premiere in the summer of 2025.
The plot takes place in a future society where humans and mermaids live together. The main character, Stephen, is a regular office worker who unexpectedly receives a marriage proposal from Chao, a princess from the mermaid kingdom. The film is described as a “100% pure love story.”
Unlike the typical portrayal of mermaids with human-like upper bodies, ChaO presents a different design. An official image shared by STUDIO4℃ shows that the mermaids, including Chao, will have a more traditional fish-like appearance.
ChaO is directed by Yasuhiro Aoki, known for his work as a character designer on Psycho-Pass: The Movie and director of SAMURAI NOODLES “THE ORIGINATOR”. Hirokazu Kojima, known for his work on Shoka and More Than a Married Couple, But Not Lovers, is responsible for character designs and animation direction. The film’s background art is led by Hiroshi Takiguchi, who previously worked on Weathering With You.
TOEI will distribute the film in Japan.
For fans of more traditional mermaid depictions, another upcoming film, Goodbye, Lara, produced by Kinema Citrus, is set to be released. Directed by Takushi Koide, known for his work on Revue Starlight, the film was announced last year.
