The highly anticipated TV anime adaptation of Sentenced to Be a Hero: The Prison Records of Penal Hero Unit 9004 has been confirmed for release in 2025. The anime is based on the award-winning light novel by Rocket Shokai and promises a gripping tale of heroism mixed with despair. Studio KAI, known for their work on Uma Musume Pretty Derby (seasons 2 and 3), is handling the production.
A second teaser visual has also been released, showcasing the protagonist, Xylo Forbartz, standing bravely against a powerful foe. The animation studio, Studio KAI, is praised for its dynamic and detailed animation.
The main cast has been announced, with Yohei Azakami voicing Xylo Forbartz and Mayu Iizuka as Teoritta. Both actors have expressed excitement about their roles, eager to bring the characters to life.
A Dark Take on Heroism
In this world, being sentenced to be a “Hero” is the worst punishment imaginable. Criminals convicted of severe crimes are forced into military service, where they must fight in a never-ending war against the Demon Lords. These individuals cannot even die—if killed, they are resurrected to fight again.
Xylo Forbartz, once the head of the Order of the Holy Knights, now leads a penal unit in the battlefront. His story takes a dramatic turn when he meets Teoritta, one of the world’s most powerful weapons.
To survive and seek revenge on those who wronged him, Xylo forms a pact with a goddess and is thrown into a chaotic world of war and political intrigue.
Xylo, once revered as a Holy Knight, becomes a Punishment Hero after killing a “Goddess.” Known for his combat skills and leadership, he handles the frontlines with remarkable precision. Despite his tough and aggressive exterior, he is also compassionate, always seeking to help those in need.
Teoritta, the “Goddess” of swords, enters a contract with Xylo. With the ability to summon a variety of swords—both Holy and demonic—she is a formidable ally. Proud and fond of praise, Teoritta also exhibits self-sacrificial qualities, a true embodiment of the “Goddess” archetype. She has a fondness for having her head patted.
