Shihei Lin, the editor behind Dandadan and other major Shonen Jump franchises like Spy x Family and Chainsaw Man, recently shared his thoughts on the success of the Dandadan anime. The series, adapted by Science Saru, has significantly exceeded the expectations of both the production team and its global audience.
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Lin reflected on the achievements of 2024, which included several milestones in anime adaptations. Among the highlights were the theatrical success of Look Back, the announcement of a third season for Spy x Family, and the upcoming Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc set for release in 2025. However, it was Dandadan that stood out as a major success story.
Lin, who also served as a producer on the Dandadan anime, noted, “The TV anime Dandadan, which began airing in October after careful and detailed discussions, has achieved the number one spot on many streaming sites globally. We are also grateful for the large number of reprints of the original comics. It has exceeded the production team’s expectations, and we are very happy that people all over the world have enjoyed it.”
The anime, which debuted in October 2024, quickly became a sensation on multiple streaming platforms, with Dandadan consistently ranking as a top series on services like Crunchyroll and Netflix. The series follows Momo, a believer in spirits and the occult, and Okarun, a staunch alien enthusiast, as their worlds collide and they embark on a thrilling, emotionally-charged adventure.
Dandadan’s Global Reach and Upcoming Season 2
At Jump Festa, it was revealed that Dandadan Season 2 is set to premiere in July 2025. The event also unveiled a new trailer and announced Abel Gongora as a co-director alongside Fuga Yamashiro. Gongora, who contributed significantly to the anime’s opening sequence, including directing, storyboarding, and drawing the background art, will expand his role in the new season.
Lin emphasized that the Dandadan team remains committed to delivering a high-quality experience for fans, adding, “We will continue to do our best to ensure everyone continues to enjoy it.”
The Dandadan manga also experienced a surge in popularity, with its circulation hitting eight million copies — double the figure prior to the anime’s release. The series’ success is indicative of the growing global appeal of Shonen Jump+ titles and the impact of well-executed anime adaptations.
Success Beyond Dandadan
Lin also highlighted the impressive performance of Look Back, which earned over two billion yen globally and topped the Amazon Prime Video charts. Reflecting on these successes, Lin teased future projects, saying, “We are also working on new series and new projects that we would like to share with you all.” Among the most anticipated titles are Fire Punch and Goodbye Eri by Tatsuki Fujimoto, as well as Akane-banashi, a popular manga edited by Lin that has garnered attention for its potential anime adaptation.
While Akane-banashi has not yet been confirmed for an anime, it was featured in a recent Netflix promo for Shonen Jump titles, which has only increased fan speculation. Lin’s involvement in these projects has only heightened expectations for future releases.
