Netflix’s popular anime My Happy Marriage made waves during the Summer 2023 anime season with its captivating love story between Miyo Saimori and Kiyoka Kudou. With Season 1 concluding in September 2023, fans have eagerly awaited the release of the next installment, set to premiere in January 2025. In a recent interview, voice actors Reina Ueda (Miyo) and Kaito Ishikawa (Kiyoka) shared insights about the upcoming season, their emotional connection to the series, and what fans can expect from the new episodes.
Renewed Excitement for Season 2
Ueda expressed both humility and apprehension upon hearing the news that My Happy Marriage had been renewed for a second season. “The announcement that the production was decided was made quickly…that quick announcement made me realize that this is a work that has really high expectations and satisfaction from everyone,” Ueda shared. As anticipation builds for Season 2, Ueda revealed her focus on staying true to Miyo’s character, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a fresh perspective as the story progresses.
What’s Next for Miyo and Kiyoka?
Season 2 of My Happy Marriage will pick up with Miyo and Kiyoka navigating life at the Kudou family estate, a significant shift from the intimate settings of Season 1. The couple faces new challenges, including an unexpected confrontation with a stranger who claims to be Miyo’s father. Ueda hinted at the evolving tension between Miyo and Arata Tsuruki, a character who previously tried to persuade Miyo to abandon Kiyoka. “I think that Arata, who said, ‘I have no intention of giving up,’ will be related to the second season, so I’m looking forward to it!” she said.
The Role of Takaihito and Socio-Political Drama
Ishikawa also teased the expanding narrative of the series, particularly with the rise of Takaihito, the Emperor’s son, who was introduced in Season 1. As Takaihito ascends the throne, his political influence is expected to shape the broader drama surrounding Miyo and Kiyoka’s world. “I think the story will be predicted by him from now on, so I’d like you to pay attention to how his actions will affect the drama,” Ishikawa said. However, he noted that certain characters, such as Godo, will not appear in the upcoming season.
Themes of Family, Growth, and Romance
At the heart of My Happy Marriage is Miyo’s transformation from a mistreated and isolated young woman into a self-confident individual. Ueda revealed how deeply she connected with Miyo’s journey. “I felt that it was a work that would raise self-esteem for the viewer as well…I personally related a lot to Miyo…I felt that her inability to accept her own existence and feelings, her past trauma, and her desire to change in spite of that…were all very real. That’s why watching it resonated with me deep in my heart,” Ueda reflected.
As Miyo continues to grow in Season 2, Ueda believes the theme of “family” will take center stage. Miyo’s relationship with Kiyoka will deepen as she learns to navigate the complexities of family dynamics. “Miyo, who was in a state where she didn’t know what a family was, was taught the warmth of family by Kiyoka…I think that when it comes to marriage, there are more people you have to deal with than just your boyfriend. I’ve been thinking about how Miyo feels about becoming a family with those people, and what she wants to do with them,” Ueda explained.
While much of the season will explore Miyo’s evolving concept of family, Ishikawa noted that the couple’s romantic bond will remain a key focus. “I think they are becoming a cute couple. And in the first episode of Season 2, the two go on a trip! I hope you will look forward to why they decided to go on a trip and what kind of trip they will take,” he teased.
Looking Ahead
With My Happy Marriage’s second season approaching, both Ueda and Ishikawa expressed their excitement for what’s to come. The evolving dynamics between Miyo and Kiyoka, as well as the introduction of new challenges and characters, promise to keep fans captivated as the series continues to explore themes of love, family, and self-discovery.
