Warner Bros. India announced on Friday that the much-anticipated anime film The Colors Within, directed by Naoko Yamada, will be released in Indian theatres on November 22. The film, which is already garnering international attention, was first unveiled at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June.
In a statement accompanying the release announcement, Warner Bros. India teased audiences with a glimpse into the world of The Colors Within:
“Watch how every colour tells a story, and how every encounter changes Totsuko’s world. Emotions come alive in ways you’ve never imagined! From the director of A Silent Voice, Naoko Yamada, comes #TheColorsWithin. Releasing in cinemas in India on November 22 in Japanese with English subtitles.”
A new trailer was also launched alongside the announcement, offering a sneak peek into the film’s vivid, emotionally charged world. The Colors Within follows Totsuko, a high school student with the rare ability to perceive the colours of people’s emotions. Her world is turned upside down when she becomes intrigued by the colour she sees in her classmate Kimi, whose emotions she cannot easily decipher. The plot takes an emotional turn when Kimi invites Totsuko to join a new band she is forming with her friend Rui. Together, they navigate the world of music, friendship, and self-discovery.
One of the trailer’s most poignant moments comes when Totsuko contemplates the colour of her own emotions, adding a layer of introspection to the film’s narrative.
A Stellar Voice Cast and Creative Team
Directed by Yamada, renowned for her work on A Silent Voice, and produced by Science Saru, The Colors Within has already made waves in Japan, having debuted in Japanese theatres this August. The film’s voice cast features Sayu Suzukawa as Totsuko and Akari Takaishi as Kimi. Other notable voice actors include Taisei Kido (Rui), Yui Aragaki (Sister Hiyoshiko), Aoi Yūki (Sister Nanakubo), Yasuko Saku Momochi (Sumika Yatsushika), and Keiko Toda (Shino Sakunaga).
Award-Winning Reception
Since its premiere, The Colors Within has been widely celebrated at international film festivals. The film won the prestigious Golden Goblet Award for Best Animation at the 2024 Shanghai International Film Festival. It also earned recognition at the 7th Animation Is Film Festival, where it tied with Memoir of a Snail for the Audience Award.
As excitement builds for the film’s Indian release, The Colors Within promises to bring a fresh perspective on the themes of emotional expression, self-awareness, and human connection—delivered through the stunning animation style that fans of Yamada’s previous work have come to expect.
