HIDIVE has announced that it will begin streaming the iconic 1993 anime film Ninja Scroll on November 12 at 12:00 p.m. EDT. The film will be available in both its original Japanese version with English subtitles, as well as the English dub.
Directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri and produced by Madhouse, Ninja Scroll follows the journey of Jubei, a skilled swordsman who rescues a young ninja woman from a deadly fate. What seems like a simple act of heroism quickly spirals into a larger mystery, as the pair investigates the gruesome deaths of an entire village, uncovering a dangerous demonic conspiracy. As they get closer to the truth, Jubei and his companion face relentless attempts on their lives by powerful demonic forces.
The film, which originally premiered in Japan in 1993, became a cult hit, particularly after its release on American cable television. To mark its 30th anniversary, Ninja Scroll was screened during Anime Expo 2024 as part of AX Cinema Nights, presented by Iconic Events Releasing.
In addition to his directing duties, Kawajiri also wrote the screenplay and designed the characters for the film. The film was licensed by Sentai Filmworks in 2012 and has been available on various streaming platforms, including HIDIVE and Hulu.
A 13-episode Ninja Scroll TV series, also produced by Madhouse, aired in 2003, with Discotek releasing the series on Blu-ray Disc in 2020. The series had previously been made available on VHS and DVD by Urban Vision from 2003 to 2005.
